Chapter 1
Without a date to the prom, Kira Lewis had no choice but to go with her friends to the prom, which would be considered pathetic in her school. Kira had recently broken up with her boyfriend, Will, for the 4th time in 6 months and had a feeling that they weren’t getting back together.
Kira was around 18 years old and in her senior year at North Jay High School. A few months ago, it was obvious that Kira would be Homecoming Queen at the prom with Will, but all hopes were lost when Kira and Will broke up. She only had one little sister at the age of 12 and her parents.
On the Saturday night before the prom, Kira was left alone home on a rainy night up in her room. She tried to call her friends and see if they were doing anything and they responded saying they we’re on a date, but Kira could tell they were just avoiding her. On her IM account, none of her friends were on and herself left her with nothing to do. She was sitting on her bed, looking up at the ceiling and wondering what she was going to do for the prom.
She couldn’t not go and she couldn’t go with her friends. Both ways, she would go from the top of the popular chain to the bottom in a flash. Her friends would humiliate her forever. Kira had to get a date and fast. She was thinking how, and came up with a bright idea.
Kira sprung from her bed and went straight to her Hollister nap sack. She shuffled through the papers and came across old graded papers, old love letters from Will, fliers, and then she finally found the paper she was looking for. At the top of the flier, it read:
North Jay High School Dating Service!
Need date and fast?
Go to www.njhs.com/datingservice.com to get a date fast!
Find someone you can like. Fast.
She sped to her laptop and went to the website, as directed. The first thing on the page said Click here to submit a date form and she immediately did so. The survey asked all your basic questions: your age, grade, your interests, and what kind of person you were interested in. It only took her a minute to fill it out and then she submitted it. The message then said that she would receive a reply message when someone found her profile and would reply to her profile. Kira sat by her laptop for a while, waiting for someone to reply. She gave up after 30 minutes and fell asleep right then and there. She was out for an hour or so and woke up to a voice saying you have one new message! Kira’s eyes slowly opened and saw that her clock read 11:38 pm. She saw her laptop flashing and went to it quickly.
Kira clicked on the message and it popped up. The message read:
Congratulations on finding your first user date! The user that had found you was Shadow666 and would like to meet you at North Jay High School at 11:45 pm. Happy Dating!
-NJHS
She realized that the meeting was only a few minutes. It was a good thing she lived near the school. Kira ran downstairs and grabbed her sweatshirt, boots, and her Ferrari car keys. She locked the door on her way out and sped to her car. As she was driving down the street to the school, she nearly broke the speed limit. She drove into the school driveway and noticed the time was 11:46. When she parked her car in the school parking lot, she also noticed there were no other cars in the parking lot besides her. She found it kind of strange, but before she could even say anything, the school lights flashed on and off in a quick manor.
She ran to the school door, which she found open. Kira slowly walked into the school, and was wondering why none of the lights were on.
“Hello? Is anyone here?” she said in a shivering voice.
She started to get really freaked out and as she was about to leave the school, she found a note on a locker saying to meet him in the gymnasium, since the lights went out, well, according to him anyway. Beads of sweat ran down Kira’s head as she made her way to the gym. She approached the entrance to the gym very slowly.
“Shadow? Are you here? I’m starting to get really scared now,” Kira said now drenched in her own sweat. She shuffled into the gymnasium like a grandma and looked around with the lights still out. When she saw no one was there, she turned around and saw something unexpected, something that would change her life forever. At that moment, she let out a scream so loud that the entire world could hear.
Meanwhile, Will showed up at Kira’s apartment and saw her car wasn’t there. He knew that her parents were with Kira’s little sister, Alyssa, in Massachusetts attending a concert and that Kira had no plans what so ever for that Saturday night.
Will was muscular and had his hair sticking up in the front of his head. From one look at him, you could tell that he’s gone to the gym more than once. He peaked through the kitchen window and saw a notepad on the table and she wrote that he was going to be at the school for an hour or so meeting someone. As soon as he saw that, he became jealous. Will was trying to find Kira so he could get back together with her, after he was acting like an idiot. He decided to follow her there.
Like Kira, Will drove up to the school and was surprised to see the school lights off. He raced into the school, with the school door still unlocked.
“Kira, you here? I just want to say I’m sorry. Please. Where are you?”
No answer. He looked in all the classrooms and finally came to the gym. He was shocked to see the gym lights were on, unlike any other rooms in the building. He looked on the ground in front of him when he walked in. He thought to himself that he was going to find a new girlfriend as he called 911.
Chapter 2
Every cop that worked in the San Francisco Police Department had always played by the book. The only one that didn’t solved the most crimes. Hawkins was a first rate detective and had been working on the force for few months now, doing his best to solve every case he can with his disability. A lot of the detectives on the force don’t notice any clues that are right in from in them, and the strange thing is that Hawkins can, and he’s blind.
On his first day on the force, Hawkins was blinded was a deadly chemical and thought it was temporary. A few days later, he was told that it was permanent, but it didn’t seem to bother him since being blind had made him the best cop on the force. Since then, Hawkins has solved homicides left and right.
You would imagine the best cop being smart, funny, nice, and a very good friend. Well, some fantasies never come true. Hawkins isn’t the best friend on the force with all his swearing, sarcasm, and smooth remarks, but he is the best damn cop there is.
On that particular Monday afternoon, Hawkins was in his office with nothing really to do but to sort through some old case files.
“Ah, damn, I missed,” Hawkins said in an growly voice.
At that moment, Hawkins boss, Captain Ralph Burchill, walked in and saw that Hawkins was smashing case files into basketballs and throwing them in his trashcan, which Burchill found amazing since Hawkins was blind.
“Hey Captain, is that you? I’m just finishing up my spring cleaning,” he responded just by the feeling he had.
“By throwing away old case files? In the middle of summer?” Captain responded, utterly confused.
“Well, C, I already know who committed these unsolved crimes when Regal read them to me. The murder of the old lady: It was the grandson since he she was a witness to the other case, the bank robbery that he also did. She found the gun in her room or something and he killed her there. And the last one, the murder of the accountant, it was the long-lost partner because he wanted revenge since the accountant hired a hit man 20 years ago to kill him.”
“And you figured that all out from Regal reading them to you?” Captain said.
“Well, pretty much. So what brings ya to my office?” Hawkins said pretty relaxed.
“I’m taking off the rest of the day, Hawkins, cause I’m picking up my daughter from school today. It’s Career Day today.”
“Career Day? That reminds me… Stacey’s coming by here later. I don’t know why, but she asked me to wait for her here and she said it was important.”
“Ok, Hawkins. Lock up the office when you leave. Have a good day,” Captain said with a smile, a smile he doesn’t get to often.
For the remainder of the day, Hawkins was throwing away his old stuff and documents he didn’t need.
A few hours later, the office door opened.
“Hey, Dad. It’s me, Stacey.”
“Hey Stace, how was school?” he said with his stick in his hand.
“Terrible, Dad. I need you to do something for me,” she said with sorrow.
“What is it, honey? You want me to arrest another teacher?”
“No, Dad. I need you to investigate a case for me. It’s my friend, Kira. She’s dead.”
Chapter 3
Even though Hawkins was blind, he could still feel the redness of Stacey’s face as she said those words. Hawkins’s mouth dropped staring blankly into the wall. He had never worked with homicides involving young children at her age. At that moment, Hawkins opened his arms when Stacey sped toward him for a hug.
“Well, of course, honey. Do you know what happened?” Hawkins said while letting her go.
“Not really. The teachers said that Kira had died and Saturday night and didn’t really say anything more,” Stacey said while wiping her tears.
“Ok, Stace. I’ll go check it out.” Hawkins said while padding down his desk for his car keys.
The weirdest thing that you would even notice about Hawkins is that he could drive blind. He got weird feelings inside him that told him what way to turn and where to go. Most of the time, he had his partner, Regal, drive with him anyway if anything were to go wrong.
“So, where we going, Hawk?” Regal said in a curious voice.
Regal would have to be the most curious person in the world, along with the most annoying. Most of the time, cops wonder how he even made it on the force. He would always ask questions like, “How do you aim with your gun, Hawkins?” or “How do you always no where your going, Hawkins?” And the answer to most of the questions is, “Shut the hell up.”
“We’re going down to the morgue to examine Stacey’s friend, Kira, and find out what happened and if any clues were left behind,” Hawkins said while taking a turn onto the highway.”
“Oh yea, I heard about that in the paper. It only said that one student attending North Jay High School was found dead by her boyfriend on Saturday night,”
“Found by her boyfriend? That sounds a little suspicious. We’ll check that out when we get there.”
They pulled into the parking lot and right before they were about to park, someone pulled into their spot.
“Hey, what the hell pal, I was just about to park there,” Hawkins yelled at the driver.
“Sorry buddy, I don’t see your name on it. Better luck next time,” the man yelled back.
“Well, there won’t be a next time,” Hawkins said, lowering his voice.
“What are you talking about? You have no authority to be harassing me like this.”
“First of all, I do. I’m with the San Francisco Police Department. Secondly, I may be blind, but I smell gas,” Hawkins said, getting out of his car.
“Oh ok, I did something wrong because I took a shit.”
“No, you dumbass.” Hawkins took his cane and hit it against the back of the guy’s car, hitting a dent.
“You hit somebody by accident when you were leaving somewhere or backing up,” Hawkins explained. He slipped his fingers under the car and then took his hand away from the car, revealing blood.
Regal then got out of the car and took out his handcuffs, while Hawkins wiped his hands.
“You’re under arrest for a hit-and-run. You have the right to remain silent and anything you say could and will be used against you.” Regal read the man the rest of his rights as he shoved him into the back of Hawkins’s car. Regal stepped away from the car after he put the criminal in and went towards Hawkins.
“How the hell did you do that, Hawkins?” Regal asked him.
“Easy. He was being a jackass.”
“You go inside and find out more about Kira. I’ll be back in an hour.”
Later on, Regal left Hawkins at the morgue to examine the body. Regal went to drop the criminal down off at the station. Hawkins made himself inside to the morgue.
“Hello, how can I help you?” Asked the secretary.
“Hi, I’m Max Hawkins and I work with the San Francisco Police Department.” Hawkins pulled out his badge.
”Oh, hi. We were expecting you. The body is in room 247,” the secretary said in a soft voice.
“Well, there’s one problem there, miss. I’m blind.”
“Oh, sorry sir. I’ll take you there myself,” she replied in a sweet voice.
As soon as she took Hawkins hand, he felt a rush of cold air. He only got that feeling when he was around his wife, Linda. Hawkins had been married for almost 20 years.
The secretary, who later introduced herself as Susan, guided Hawkins down to the correct room. Once they arrived, Hawkins tried to thank her, but by the time he did, she was gone.
“So, what do we have here gentlemen?” Hawkins asked.
“Well, Mr. Hawkins, it looks like she died by a few different things. She has marks around her neck, very thick like rope, which concludes that she suffered from suffocation. Also, there are stab and gun shot wounds in her back and left shoulder.”
“Now why the hell would someone go through all that trouble if she would be already dead after only one of those things?” Hawkins asked curiously.
“Well, we were kind of hoping you could answer that question, sir.”
At that moment, Hawkins’s cell phone rang and he picked it up. He was on the phone for a few minutes and was yelling a lot into the phone.
After he hung up, he shoved his phone into his pocket in an angry manor.
“Damn it, damn it, damn it, damn it!” Hawkins said while hitting the cabinets near him.
”Sir, May I ask what is the matter?”
“This girl’s boyfriend, William Spencer, was just murdered.”
Chapter 4
Hawkins then ran out of the morgue with some assistance, and made his way to Regal’s car, which he found after Regal called his cell phone.
“Hey Hawkins, you found out who did it?” Regal asked.
“Not yet, but we got to get to headquarters on the double. Will, the boyfriend, was just killed.”
“Wow,” Regal said without a smile, “but before we go, I got to tell you something.”
“What did you do now?” Hawkins said assuming he did something wrong.
“Well, the hit-and-run guy we arrested earlier, got away.”
“Ah, Jesus Christ, Regal. What the hell happened?” Hawkins replied not too happy.
“We were driving and he hit me over the head with his handcuffs, unlocked the door, and got away. I sent some more officers to get him because I had to go and get you.”
“We’ll talk about it later. If we don’t get to the station fast, there’s going to be more dead people than people alive.”
Once he arrived, he used his stick to find where the steps were. When Hawkins opened up the door, he could feel that people were running in all directions, hearing many voices. He tried to get by without getting rammed into, and got to the Captain’s office.
“Oh, hey Hawkins. What did you find out about the body?” Captain asked.
“That’s not important yet. How was the boy killed?”
“He was strangled and the body was found by another high school student about 20 minutes ago in a teacher’s classroom.”
“This doesn’t make any sense at all,” Hawkins added.
“What do you mean?” Captain said confusingly.
“The girl was killed in such a gruesome way, but the boy was just strangled?”
“But they were both found in the school though,” Captain said, catching on.
“Whom did the room belong to? The one that the boy was found in?”
Captain opened up his little red notebook and flipped through the pages. Then he finally came to the page.
“The room belonged to a teacher by the name of Michael Dwelving. He hadn’t checked in that day though. He was working late on Saturday night doing research.”
“Sounds like a lead to me,” Hawkins said while walking in circles around the room.
“Ok, I’ll bring some boys with me and go check it out. Catch you later, Hawkins,” Captain said grabbing his coat.
“Wait, wait, why can’t I go?” Hawkins said, as Captain was about to leave.
“Well, Regal’s going to need your help catching the hit-and-run guy that got away. That’s big stuff, Hawk”
“No, not really. The guy’s probably on the side of a highway probably trying to hitchhike his way to Mexico. After the photo of him we sent out all over the country, there’s no way that guy will be even to leave the county,” said Hawkins, frustrated.
“Hawkins, just stay here. I’ll call you if I find anything.”
For the rest of the day, Hawkins sat in his office thinking about the case.
“Why was she killed in so many ways? And why was the boyfriend killed in a different way?”
As Hawkins thought about it for hours, the more it didn’t make sense. Right before he was going to call the Captain, Regal walked in to the office.
“Hawkins, Captain’s waiting on Line 4. He said it’s urgent.”
Hawkins searched around his desk and finally found it under a stack of papers. Even though he was one of the best one of the best detectives, doesn’t mean his is the cleanest.
“Yea, Captain. What you find out?” Hawkins asked immediately.
“Well Hawk, it seems we’ve found a dead end.”
Hawkins hung up the phone. He knew exactly what it meant.
Hawkins grabbed his stuff and Regal and ran out the door to his car. This would of been his third body in three days: a personal best. The drive there wasn't long, since the school was only 3 blocks away.
When they arrived, cops were swarmed all over the building. In the front, back, sides, you name it. Hawkins found a space up front, like it was being reserved for him. Regal wanted to make sure no one was going to park there, so Hawkins wouldn't end up in the fued again.
They went straight past the crowd and made there way right to the body. For some of the cops there, this had been deja-vu. They had just been here a couple days ago to get Kira.
Before they even made it into the room, the partners were greeted by the Captain, with an unhappy look on his face.
"So what do we got, Cap?" Hawkins asked, getting straight to the point.
"Well, the guy was in the closet. The paramedics say that he died around Saturday night."
"Of course, and it makes sense. He was probably here when Kira was killed. Here's what happened.." Hawkins was then interrupted.
"Sorry, Hawkins, I'm afraid this case isn't that easy. Yes, he was here when Kira was killed, but your theroy doesn't add up."
"What do you mean?" Hawkins asked, thinking that he would be right.
"Well, from what the paramedics say, other detectives, and I say, this wouls a double murder."
"What do you mean by that?" Hawkins asked, not understanding.
"It means they killed each other." Captain said with a cold look in his eye.
